PHILADELPHIA: Theatre Philadelphia has announced the return of Philly Theatre Week, one of the largest theatre festivals in the region. The 2023 festival will feature more than 100 performances from March 23 to April 2.

“Philly Theatre Week is always such an exciting time of the year for theatregoers,” Theatre Philadelphia executive director LaNeshe Miller-White said in a statement. “Theatre Philadelphia has moved to a pay-what-you-can model for this year’s Theatre Week in order to ensure access for all to the performances. It’s a great opportunity for someone to try theatre for the first time, or to try a new company or type of show.”

Philly Theatre Week will showcase 50 events from 41 artists and companies, including productions, readings, and special events. The festival will be held in Philadelphia as well as surrounding suburbs, southern New Jersey, and Delaware.

All Philly Theatre Week shows will offer pay-what-you-can tickets, allowing patrons to pick the price they pay based on their ability, though shows are offering only a limited number of pay-what-you-can ticket. The full list can be found on the Philly Theatre Week website, along with a full list of events.

A free preview event of the festival will be held on March 20 at the Kimmel Cultural Campus. The event will feature work from the Road Company Theater Group, Run Boy Run Productions, InterAct Theatre Company, Theater Unspeakable, and others. Registration is required to attend.

“Since 2018, I’ve participated in every Philly Theatre Week,” said Chris Davis, an artist who will present work at this year’s festival, in a statement. “Theatre Philadelphia works hard to showcase every show, from the big theatres to the small theatres, and therefore makes the playing field much more equitable, especially for small producers like myself.”

Philly Theatre Week is presented by Theatre Philadelphia, the region’s umbrella organization whose mission is to unite, celebrate, and promote the Philadelphia region’s diverse and growing theatre community. As of 2021, the organization had a budget of approximately $349,500.
