In an interview with Vogue U.K., Academy award nominee Paul Mescal says he is set to play William Shakespeare in the upcoming film adaptation of Lolita Chakrabarti‘s newest work, Hamnet

While official word of Mescal's casting had not been released prior to his Vogue profile, news of the film adaptation was released before the production had completed its world premiere at Stratford-upon-Avon.

The work, described as “a love letter to passion, birth, grief, and the magic of nature,” is based on Maggie O'Farrell's best-selling novel of the same name, which explores the personal life of Shakespeare and his wife after they suffer the loss of their 11 year old son to the plague.

Directed by Academy award winner Chloé Zhao, Mescal also states that the film adaptation will co-star Jessie Buckley, recently seen in the West End as Sally Bowles in Cabaret, for which she received an Olivier.

Says Mescal in the interview, “That book [Hamnet]—it's just devastating. I can't wait. If I told a younger version of myself that this would be [shooting] this year, I wouldn't believe it. I've obviously been in a film with Jessie before [Maggie Gyllenhaal's The Lost Daughter] but we've never shared the screen or a working process together. I think she's one of our present-day greats. And Chloé is somebody I can't wait to get in the weeds with, and get into the heads of those characters.”

In addition to the sold-out world premiere at Stratford-upon-Avon, Hamnet is currently enjoying a West End run at London's Garrick Theatre, where the production will continue through February 17.

Hamnet will be produced by Hera Pictures, in development with Neal Street Productions, which was founded by Sam Mendes, Pippa Harris and Caro Newling, and Amblin Partners. Chiara Atik is writing the screenplay.
